. So, you can read! Congrats!
Are you reading a book right now? How far are you into it and what do you think so far? If you're not, what was the last book you read and how did you feel about it?
I'm trying to get through The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins right now, but I keep having to put it down to get homework done. I'm only a few pages in, so I haven't really formed an opinion on it yet.
. Do you have a favorite book? Do you have... a book you really liked, at least?
Ffft yes. Crime and Punishment, Catcher in the Rye, Wyrd Sisters and any of the Discworld City Watch books. The Poisonwood Bible was also amazing. And I like Novak's Temeraire series, it has an interesting premise!
. What would you say is your favorite genre to read? What to tend to steer away from?
I like satires and generally any kind of well-written humor. And detective stories. I'm (usually) not really into high fantasy, teen romance, or 90% of ~contemporary literature~
.Do you tend more towards fiction or non-fiction/information books?
I've read more fiction, but recently I've been interested in more non-fiction stuff.
. How about a favorite author, or perhaps a few?
Terry Pratchett, Bill Bryson, Agatha Christie (I can't explain the appeal after reading the same female characters over and over again, BUT I STILL LIKE HER)
. Have you read any terrible books? Something you'd recommend staying away from?
I don't think I've actually read any horrible books in a while! Hmmm.
. Do you reread books, or is once enough? Any exceptions so far?
I've reread most of the Discworld, Hercule Poirot, and Bryson books I own. And Slaughterhouse-Five and Stiff.
. What were some of your favorite books as a child?
LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE YEAH. And the sequels, ffft. Also, my children's encyclopedia : D;;
. Do you like poetry as well as prose? Got a favorite poet or poem?
I'm not a big fan of poetry, but I love slam poetry. "Such Big Words by J.W. Baz is my absolute favorite, as is this poem by Beau Sia. And pretty much anything by Anis Mojgani, and lots of stuff on Def Poetry.
. Do you buy books much or mostly just borrow?
I'd say half and half.
. Have you read any books after seeing them in movie form? Which did you enjoy more?
Lord of the Rings, ahahaha. I read it when I was 11 though, and I didn't like the books then because I couldn't deal with them singing songs every five pages. I can't really say how I'd feel about it now.
. What about reading the book before there was a movie? How did you feel about the movie? Did you even bother seeing it?
Harry Potter series, and Howl's Moving Castle. The HMC movie made me really, really sad. Where were all the mixed up transformations, Michael, Wales, the proper Witch of the Waste, and slitherer-outer bastard Howl I'd come to know and love? Sadness! And Sophie's red hair. That little detail gets me every time.
. Do you read any other forms of literature aside from novels? Such as graphic novels, comics,(fan fiction???) etc.?
All of the above C:;;
. What is a book you want to read, but haven't yet? What intrigues you about it?
Godel Escher Bach by Douglas Hofstadter has been sitting on my desk for AGES. It just sounds really interesting, but I slog through the math stuff. I also want to read a bunch of books about colonial India and ancient Egypt for research purposes. TIME, WHERE ARE YOU, I NEED YOU.
. If you could rewrite the end of one book (or any other part, I suppose), which would you choose? If you were satisfied with every book you read's end, yay.
I would've taken the epilogue out of HP7. The rest of the book wasn't bad, but when I got to the ending, I just sat there and went, "WHAT."
If you can think of one, name a book that made you:
- cry: Martin the Warrior by Brian Jacques. SHHHH, I WAS 9.
- laugh: All of the Discworld novels, more or less
- think, in a deeper sense than the obvious: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins
- feel pure happiness: Hmm! I can't think of any off the top of my head.
- become so addicted you put off everything in order to finish it: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. That book is all sorts of amazing.
- die of boredom: Hamlet by Shakespeare, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
- learn something new: Stiff by Mary Roach; taught me plenty of stuff about cadavers 8D
- squirm with squickiness: Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Augghh the apple stuck in him, and then he auuugh. I twitch just thinking about it.
- squirm with glee: a lot of Pratchett stuff
- very embarrassed to be reading it: I can't remember the name, but this lady was staring at me while I pulled it off the gay/lesbian section at Barnes & Noble. MAN, WHAT'S UP WITH THAT.
- angry: House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, I HATED Lily Bart. I couldn't get through the book because of her.
